Generation Equality Nordic

During 2020, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality from 1995, the Danish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers worked with UN Women to make the perspectives of young people from the Nordic countries on global gender equality issues more visible. NIKK was commissioned to develop and implement the Nordic sub-campaign #GenerationEqualityNordic as part of the Danish Presidency’s project Beijing+25 og fremtid’s ligestilling policy (Beijing+25 and the future of gender equality policy).

The campaign aimed to:

  • Highlight the engagement and views of young people in the Nordic region on the rights of girls and women and what is required in work to promote gender equality
  • Communicate about what the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is, that it was celebrating 25 years, that it is important that young people have their say on what is required in work to promote gender equality, and the status reports from the Nordic countries
  • Provide feedback on this to decision-makers in the Nordic countries, who in turn have committed themselves to bringing these voices to the UN level, in order to make the  views of young people from the Nordic countries part of the global conversation.

Due to the COVID-19, all planned top-level meetings in 2020 were cancelled. As a result, the campaign also ended early. In order to take these conversations further, young people were invited to talks with the Nordic Ministers for Gender Equality, so that their perspective would be included in the new Nordic Co-operation Programme on Gender Equality, which will start in 2025. All in all, the project helped to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between NIKK and young people’s organisations in the Nordic region.
