In 2026, NIKK will launch an initiative focusing on vulnerable living conditions among the LGBTI* community in the Nordic region. The initiative builds on NIKK’s previous initiatives with the aim of utilising, highlighting and further developing the results of our previous projects. The main focus of the project will be to highlight these themes at some of the events held in the region during the year.

Background:
Among LGBTI people in the Nordic region, there are several groups that are particularly vulnerable. These include groups that belong to multiple minorities and are exposed to various forms of discrimination and marginalisation based on, for example, racism, homophobia and ableism. Studies show that LGBTI people with non-normative functionality or a foreign background report exposure to bullying, violence, threats and hate crimes to a greater extent than other LGBTI people. Transgender people are also a particularly vulnerable group who face various obstacles in life, not least in working life, where conditions for transgender people as a group are worse than for the majority population.
