Women on the Margins: Gender Equality in the Nordic Prison System
The project Women on the Margins aims to advance knowledge about women and gender equality in Nordic prison systems and generate insights with implications for policy and practice. Women remain structurally marginalised within prison systems largely designed for and by men. International research shows that women in prison experience high levels of vulnerability and have gender-specific needs.
Yet, while the Nordic countries are global leaders in gender equality, knowledge about how these needs are recognised and addressed in Nordic prison systems remains limited. The project brings together researchers from the Nordic countries to build a new Nordic knowledge base on gender equality and imprisonment. Through comparative knowledge production and exchange, the project will identify shared challenges, differences and promising practices and policies across the region, providing a foundation for cross-Nordic dialogue and collaboration on ways forward.
