Young people are vital agents for a just green transition, but participation varies across social identities and backgrounds. Men and boys tend to be less interested in both sustainability and gender equality.

How can organisations strengthen the conscious and committed, while also bringing underrepresented voices to the table?

This report analyses experiences of young people in Nordic nonprofit organisations from a gender and climate perspective. It identifies clear patterns and obstacles and considers key approaches to enabling more inclusive youth movements.

Trans People’s Working Life Conditions in the Nordic Region


Trans people are a particularly vulnerable group and face various obstacles throughout their lives, not least in working life, where they experience worse conditions as a group than the majority population. Today, there is limited knowledge of the working life conditions for trans people and the underlying factors that affect their employment. The national studies that have been published have different areas of focus, but collectively they can provide a clearer picture of working life conditions for trans people in the Nordic countries.

This publication summarises the field of knowledge in the Nordic countries. By consolidating existing research, the publication helps to identify and, in some cases, fill knowledge gaps and thereby be of use to the Nordic countries. The knowledge review aims is to make trans people’s working life conditions visible to enable dialogue and identify needs and measures for improvement.

Preventing Sexual Harassment at Work


Sexual harassment and prevention in the Nordic workplace have been studied in a two-year Nordic research initiative. Several projects have developed new methods and tools in collaboration with labour market stakeholders, managers and employees. The results are now available in a new report.

The Nordic research funding initiative on sexual harassment at work 2021–2023 sought to initiate relevant research, cross-sectoral collaboration and shared knowledge building.

The research funding initiative was carried out in collaboration between the Nordic sectors for gender equality, culture and working life and the Nordic Committee for Children and Young People. 

The objective of the initiative was mainly to contribute towards new knowledge on sexual harassment at work in the Nordic countries with a focus on preventive measures and intervention methods. The findings were to contribute towards a good knowledge base for policy development and to cross-sectoral Nordic collaboration within the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Key messages on older LGBTI people’s inter­actions with health and social care

Results from a Nordic high-level meeting


We are now launching a publication that provides an introduction to the state of knowledge in the field of older LGBTI people’s living conditions and how researchers and other experts in the field describe urgent problems and knowledge gaps and identify actions required for change.

The publication summarises and provides an introduction to the state of knowledge in the field and how researchers and other experts describe problems and gaps in knowledge and identify actions required for change. It summarises the key messages from a high-level expert meeting held in connection with the launch of the Nordic report: “He went back into the closet”: Older LGBTI people’s interactions with health and social care in the Nordic countries.

The report’s title: “He went back into the closet” reflects the experiences of some older LGBTI people when they move into care homes where their needs are not properly met.

  • Trans care is negatively affected by the fact that trans people are still pathologised in all the Nordic countries.
  • There is a lack of research on health professionals in relation to LGBTI issues. More research is needed.
  • There is a need for more knowledge on the specific health problems and diseases of older LGBTI people

Economic vulnerability in different stages of life


Every year, the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) brings together UN member states to set goals for global gender equality and develop measures to promote gender equality. For 2024, the theme is economic vulnerability and how it can be addressed to empower women and girls.

The Nordic countries have worked together for over 40 years to promote gender equality in all areas of society and have important knowledge to contribute. This knowledge base highlights a range of relevant areas for the 2024 theme: it describes economic vulnerability through all phases of life and shows the conditions of different groups through intersectional perspectives. It also addresses economic violence in different forms, the consequences for victims and the need for support structures, as well as summarising a number of key messages.

“He went back into the closet”: Older LGBTI people´s interactions with health and social care in the Nordic countries


The situation for LGBTI people in the Nordic countries has changed radically in recent decades. This has resulted in increased access to social and legal rights, enhanced protection against discrimination, increased visibility and more opportunities for community. Nevertheless, studies show that a gender identity or sexual orientation that does not follow the conventional norm still significantly increases the risk of ill health.

How do these conditions affect older LGBTI people’s opportunities in ageing and what happens in contact with health and social care? The Nordic Council of Ministers has initiated a project that will contribute to increased knowledge about the living conditions and quality of life of older LGBTI people, especially in their encounter with health and social care. The report is based on 38 publications consisting of both quantitative and qualitative studies.

A research overview encompassing education and training, the workplace and the pandemic


This research overview is based on a systematic overview of research and relevant literature from the Nordic countries between 2018 and 2022, with a focus on young men between the ages of 15 and 30 years.

The overall purpose of the overview is to highlight current knowledge about young men’s mental health problems by investigating what causes these problems, and their consequences.

The overview focuses in particular on knowledge about young men’s mental health in relation to current conditions and challenges in education and training and the workplace in the Nordic countries.

Re-imagining Sexual Harassment – Perspectives from the Nordic Region


In the book Re-imagining Sexual Harassment – Perspectives from the Nordic Region, 19 writers contribute to a more nuanced and deeper understanding of issues such as violence in the workplace, sexual harassment in academia and the challenges and opportunities of the legal system. Academic text is alternated with literary contributions.

Gender perspective on green jobs in the Nordic region: A collection of results from NIKK 2020–2022


The Nordic Council of Ministers has adopted the vision that the Nordic region will be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. This knowledge review sheds light on a number of reports that use gender analyses to help understand the challenges of the green transition. It presents five thematic approaches to green jobs and concludes with a summary and key messages from these reports.

The purpose of this report is to identify links between issues related to gender-segregated educational choices and gender segregation in the labour market related to the transition to green jobs. The hope is that it will help to deepen the Nordic region’s perspectives on these issues and, by extension, contribute to sustainable solutions for social development in the Nordic countries.

10! Ten years of cooperation through the Nordic Gender Equality Fund


When the Nordic Council of Ministers established the Nordic Gender Equality Fund in June 2013, the aim was to stimulate Nordic cooperation in the area of gender equality. Since then, the Fund has granted funding to NGOs, public authorities, researchers and networks within the context of 79 different projects.

In this publication, we present the experiences, insights and effects of these first ten years of the Fund.
